Welcome to the Current Middle Ages

Thank you for visiting the Shire of Plattefordham, a local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), in the Kingdom of the Outlands.

The Shire of Plattefordham includes the Wyoming towns of Douglas, Glenrock, Casper, Midwest, Buffalo, Sheridan, and the surrounding areas. The Kingdom of the Outlands includes El Paso, Texas, all of New Mexico, most of Colorado, and most of Wyoming.

The SCA is an international non-profit volunteer educational organization which is devoted to learning and teaching history via research and re-creation of history. The Society focuses on pre-17th century skills, arts, combat, and culture, and employs its knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities.

An illumination of a medieval construction site, depicting the construction of the abbey of St. Denis Basilica in Paris during the reign of King Dagobert I (623-639). . 

The illumination on parchment was done by Robinet Testard, c. 1471, ad is from the Grandes Chroniques de France.

The right foreground shows a stonemason squaring a pillar, and behind him two masons use hammer and chisel to carve stone blocks. Behind them, two laborers carry material towards the partially-finished building in the background, where several more workers are lifting and setting stone, and a horse-drawn cart brings heavier materials. Behind the building is a row of trees, a mountain topped by a castle, and a blue sky marked by the tips of ship masts. On the left side of the illumination, the king and his retinue observe the workers.
